Dermatology is a medicine branch dealing with diagnosis and treatment of all skin problems. The origin is from the Greek word „dermis“ (meaning - skin).

Dermatology, as a separate medical science, has its own Institute of Dermatology at the former Medical Academy in Sofia. Dermatology in Bulgaria has great achievements and traditions.

Dermatology deals with the dermis that is built mostly by connective tissue. It provides nutrition for the epidermis and determines skin’s strength. It consists of two sub-layers - papillary and reticular.

Collagen and elastic fibers significantly decrease as a consequence of the natural aging process.. This brings to gradual loss of skin's elasticity and smoothness. The dermis is richly vascularized and its blood vessels carry 10% of total blood flow. This is of great importance for skin’s thermoregulatory function as well as its role as a blood depot.

Blood goes through dermis layer much more slowly than in the other tissues and may reach up to 1 liter. There is a number of nerve endings in dermis and epidermis layers through which human body constantly receives information about changes from the external environment. Beneath the epidermis, the dermis forms some protrusions called papillae.

They are most visible over palms and fingers and they form a highly individual patterns. This feature is used in forensics and criminology. Sweat and sebaceous cells as well as skin appendages  are located in different parts of the dermis.
