visceral surgery

Visceral Surgery is a branch of general surgery and requires acquisition of multidirectional and extensive knowledge entitling practical activity in general and emergency surgery and a large part of abdominal operations.

The visceral surgeon, however, must build an additional training to master an increasing number of complicated operations in surgery of pancreas, liver, biliary system, gastrointestinal tract, laparoscopic interventions, organ transplantation, etc. Therefore there was a need of a new specialty called "Visceral surgery" in many countries during last 20 years.

Visceral Surgery encompasses knowledge, technical skills and medical evaluation, needed for adequate diagnosis and treatment over surgical diseases of esophagus, abdominal organs, endocrine organs, anterior abdominal wall and retroperitoneal space.

The scientific fundamentals include (but not limited to) knowledge about diseases of anterior abdominal wall, peritoneum, gastrointestinal tract, anal and perianal area, liver, biliary system, pancreas and spleen, endocrine organs (regardless of their location) retroperitoneum and other organs placed in it.

Visceral Surgery requires a thorough physiology knowledge, pathophysiology and clinical pathology, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, semi-invasive and invasive tests, preoperative assessment and postoperative intensive care, trauma, oncology and transplantation.

The viscera are the large internal organs of the body.

Visceral surgery is a specialised branch of general surgery, focused on surgical interventions for conditions, disorders and deformities of the viscera and mammary glands.

The visceral surgeon works closely with the gastroenterologist. Surgeons operate in cases where tumours are found in the viscera and carries out interventions for haemorrhoids. Surgeons carry out most interventions laparoscopically - using an optical endoscope as well as modern laser techniques.

Minimally invasive and visceral surgery is a involving surgical procedures of the abdomen, chest cavity or groin area, often using specialized medical equipment such as cameras, purpose-built optical equipment and surgical instruments. This method is very gentle and causes minimal impact on the patients’ body, as procedures are conducted with only small incisions in the skin.

Treatments in the field of visceral surgery include:

• Surgical treatment of hernias
• Laparoscopic gastric banding
• Stomach bypass
• Gallbladder surgery
• Colon surgery
• Appendectomy
• Surgical treatment of umbilical hernia
• Surgical treatment of haemorrhoids
• Surgical treatment of in the anal area
• Specialized thyroid surgery
• Operations of diaphragmatic hernia
• Surgical treatment for reflux disease
