Pediatric Haematology and Oncology (PHO) is an independent medical specialty that deals with blood diseases (benign and malignant) and solid tumors in children from 0 to 18 years of age.
PHO specialist must be able to read and interpret peripheral blood test; to perform bone marrow aspirations and lumbar punctures (diagnostic and therapeutic) and they must be able to evaluate the cytological findings.
Moreover, PHO covers the performance of trepan biopsy, a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of lymph, tests such as ultrasound, X-ray, CT, NMR, scintigraphic methods. PHO specialists should be able to diagnose promptly all oncology diseases in childhood and their complications.
For complex and difficult for diagnosis and treatment cases, PHO specialists should organize highly specialized consultation in place or refer promptly for hospitalization to further specialized centers.
Hematology (from Greek: Heima - blood) is specialized field of general medicine dealing with the blood cells, but also with the organs and tissues that produce them. Hematology case and the clotting system of blood, various malignancies (transformations) which belong to this physiological system. Doctors specializing in diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs are called hematologists.
Oncology (from Greek: ογκος - swelling + λόγος - word, teaching, science) is a narrow medical specialty and science that explores malignant (cancerous) formation in humans. Oncology deals with the etiology and pathogenesis of tumor processes, as well as diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.
Oncology is also directly related to many other medical sciences and subspecialties. There is a direct link with genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, anatomy, cytology, histology, pathology and others.
The study of tumors is done by trained medical professionals - oncologists – doctors who have expertise of histology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
