Geriatrics is a major section of medical science that studies and treats some of the major problems of aging and is also engaged in the thorough research, adequate treatment and early prevention of various specific diseases in the elderly patients.

Subjects of the medical specialty of geriatrics and the corresponding diseases often emerge at an earlier age, which is important to understand age-specific gerontological conditions and diseases in later stages.

Geriatrics deals with such issues as:

• Internal Medicine
• Orthopedics
• Neuroscience
• Psychiatry

Geriatrics aims to contribute to improving the overall health of the elderly and strives to improve the overall quality of life.

The medical specialist - geriatrician - plays an important role in the research and treatment of a variety of diseases which, by their specifics, do not fit the profile of other physicians. Geriatrics can be understood as an interdisciplinary field of science in medicine, mostly due to the numerous relationships in the typical clinical picture in elderly patients.

Geriatric medicine is a subspecialty of internal medicine or family medicine that deals with the complex medical and psychosocial problems of older-age adults. A geriatrician has special knowledge of the aging process and special skills in the diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and rehabilitative aspects of illness in the elderly.

In response to the rapidly aging population, geriatrics has emerged as an area of medicine focusing on health promotion and the treatment of disease and disability in later life.

Elderly patients often have multiple co-morbidities, use multiple medications, and may face social disadvantages, emotional vulnerability, or financial challenges.

Communication may be complicated by hearing or visual loss. Given the types of problems that elderly adults and their families face, geriatric medicine clinicians employ varied skills to treat challenging acute and chronic diseases.

Geriatricians can take a whole-person and family approach that utilizes biopsychosocial and functional models in the context of working with an interdisciplinary group. These physicians provide care for geriatric patients in the patient's home, office, long-term care settings such as nursing homes, and the hospital.
