Obstetrics and Gynecology
Obstetrics is a medical and biological science that studies the fertilization, pregnancy and childbirth. This medical field also deals with the structure, functions and disorders of the female reproductive system during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding; any disorders within newborns or any disorders of the mammary gland.
The term derives from the French word аccouchе́r - to give birth.
The main purpose of obstetrics is to find and use more and more effective methods for preserving and protecting the health of women and their awaited baby during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
Obstetrics is a clinical discipline that studies physiological and pathological processes within woman’s body with regard to conception and pregnancy, birth and postpartum period, as well as developing methods for childbirth, prevention and treatment of complications during pregnancy and childbirth, fetus disorders and newborn observation.
Obstetrics’ history is closely linked with the history of medicine in general.
